The Forbidden fruit by Aaron Schnorbitz

This work - Forbidden fruit – is Aaron Schnorbitz’ attempt to reconsider in a characteristic eccentric manner the source of the Fall of humanity.

According with one of the main principlesof rubber art – came, saw, remade – he takes as a basis the classic work of Lucas Cranach the Elder Adam & Eve (1526) and changes familiar to Everyman imagery in aspiration to reach the peak of creative expression.

He author affirms that the schnorbization of Lucas Cranach’s painting doesn’t aim to insult the religious, but «gives them the opportunity to philosophically assess the theological dogma about the original sin».

«Temptation and the Fall were always my points of interest», - says Aaron: «The practical aspect of this issue is particularly interesting for me, so I prefer investigating it in my own personto feel deeply all pleasant moments of this process. It probably pushed me to give Adam my appearance, ‘cause I always wanted to try walking in his shoes. And Eve…her image was inspired by my beautiful muse Betty Logan».

Some historical facts about the ball gag evolution

The red ball gag, incarnating under Aaron Schnorbitz’ cosmogenic theory the human catharsis through pain, suffering and humiliation is in his opinion one of the most powerful artifacts that ever was on Earth.

Its formation as a symbol traces its roots in middle age when it was used by inquisitors to save their ears from heart-rending screams of tortured victims. That time the gag represented a hollow steel pipe fixed on a bolt locking mask. The hole allowed breathing, but if one really wanted, it could be stopped up with a finger to asphyxiate the victim.

This device was frequently used on those condemned to flames. The steel gag was particularly wide-spread during the mass burning of heretics. It allowed to avoid condemned’s howls to drown sacred music performed during the execution.

Interesting is the fact that Giordano Bruno was burned in Rom in 1600 with a steel mouth gag. This event was probably the reason of the following transformation of the pipe gag in the ball gag so far as the artifact ranked high among other human symbols and needed a laconic shape.

I’m a bird with plastic wings flying in a sky of steel. There’s a red sphere following me in my flight. I can see my reflection in its shiny rubber surface. I’m fascinated by this irreproachable shape as though created to show us our own imperfection. We are paltry in the face of this aesthetic power embedded in this unique form. It’s the basic element of creation. You can’t deny it.

Ancient art is great: dancing satyrs, bearded Gilgamesh, mythic beasts, resurrecting Osiris and so on. The feelings and motion are reflected to perfection. Every curve intensifies the expression of these everlasting creations. They are unique, original, they are real masterpieces – fruits of the best endeavors of human being.
But I always found that they could be improved. Just few touches here and there to give them this inimitable spirit of rubber humor and to emphasize the significance of …my rubber art company. Why not, man! I’m a craft-brother after all!
